In the wake of Scott Perry’s departure, the Sacramento Kings have reportedly met with Otis Smith, the former general manager of the Orlando Magic.

All had been quiet on the Sacramento Kings‘ front following their quick, calculated trip in this year’s free agency period.

Well, that was until the surprising departure of executive vice president of basketball operations Scott Perry, who left the Kings to take on the general manager role for the New York Knicks. In the couple of weeks since Perry has left the organization, not much was known where the Kings would go from there or even if they were interested in filling the available position.

That was until Wednesday afternoon as details have emerged over who the Kings are looking at to possibly add to their front office.

According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Kings are meeting with Otis Smith in regards to their vice president of basketball ops role. Smith is most known for his tenure as the former general manager of the Orlando Magic, which he filled for six seasons from 2006-12.

Since his dismissal from the Magic, Smith has notably been a part of the Detroit Pistons, where he has taken on multiple roles in the organization, both on the NBA and G League level with their affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive.

More from Sacramento Kings

As Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee noted following Wojnarowski’s report, the Kings are looking to find Perry’s replacement before heading into the regular season.

Jones also disclosed in a further report that the team may look to Milt Newton, the former general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, for the same position.

This is clearly quite a lot of news to digest after a quiet spell, but there are a few things that have remained consistent for the Kings.

As was the case with their decision to add Perry a few months ago, it’s clear the Kings still desire an experienced executive to have alongside Vlade Divac, the team’s GM.

Having a person that’s well connected around the league and has good standing relationships with players and their agents has been a priority for the Kings, especially after being criticized for not making it one for some time.

That was exactly what Perry brought to the organization and it was evident from not only the team’s ensuing roster moves in free agency but in the player workouts they assembled throughout the pre-draft process.

For how incredibly brief Perry’s time with the Kings was, whoever his successor will be will have big shoes to fill due to the imprint Perry left on the team after this spring and summer.

No matter the case, the Kings are clearly doing right on their part in continuing to make the position alongside Divac’s one for current and former front office executives to strongly consider.
