Mere months after adding him to their front office, the Sacramento Kings are reportedly losing Scott Perry to the New York Knicks.

After a successful haul in this year’s draft and a calculated excursion in free agency, it seemed as if the offseason had come to a quiet close for the Sacramento Kings.

Well, that was the case until Thursday afternoon as current Kings executive vice president of basketball operations Scott Perry is reportedly in line to become the new general manager of the New York Knicks.

First reported by Adrian Wojnarowski and Ian Begley of ESPN, the Kings granted the Knicks permission to interview with Perry and both sides met yesterday to discuss the opening as Wojnarowski and Begley detailed later in a more extensive report.

Before long, further reports surfaced from Vince Goodwill of CSN Chicago saying both sides had come to an agreement, which were later confirmed by Sam Amick of USA Today.

As Amick additionally relayed, the Kings are seeking cash compensation in exchange for Perry from the Knicks.

More from Sacramento Kings

It’s certainly a stunning turn of events after the Kings brought on Perry when he was let go from the Orlando Magic at the conclusion of the regular season.

The Kings had been in need of an experienced front office executive to have alongside Vlade Divac, the team’s vice president of basketball operations and general manager.

In over two and a half months, the addition of Perry had brought some much needed respectability to the organization, which was evidenced by their ability to bring in top tier draft prospects for workouts during the pre-draft process and ultimately landing one in the case of De’Aaron Fox.

Along with that, Perry’s presence in the organization certainly played a part in the team landing deals with veteran caliber players in free agency like George Hill, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter.

It’s undoubtedly a grand gesture on the Kings’ part to let Perry pursue a promotion, knowing full well he has no way of ascending to an equal position of power in the organization under the team’s current structure.

With that being said, it leaves the Kings without an essential resource once again, and as Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee mentioned, the news of the team letting Perry chase an opportunity in New York is drawing a reaction from teams around the league.

Where the Kings go from here is obviously an interesting question as one would assume they’ll be back in the market to add another experienced executive to have alongside Divac once again.

Then again, much of the heavy lifting for their ongoing rebuild has already been accounted for with the events of this summer, which was punctuated Thursday with the signing of Serbian international Bogdan Bogdanovic being made official.

As ESPN‘s Bobby Marks notes, both the Kings and the Knicks would not be allowed to trade with each other next season if terms on some form of compensation is ultimately reached.
