The Sacramento Kings’ search for a new assistant general manager is over as they have named Brandon Williams to the position.

It’s fitting that an eventful July for the Sacramento Kings ends with another savvy and shrewd addition to their organization.

Throughout the month of July, the Kings made major waves by landing high-caliber veterans to put alongside their wide foundation of promising, but inexperienced players. By the time the team was leaving this year’s NBA Summer League, it seemed as if the Kings’ offseason had come to a fast and satisfying close.

But when Scott Perry, the team’s former vice president of basketball operations, left to take the general manager role for the New York Knicks earlier this month, it was fair to wonder how the Kings would go about finding a replacement for Perry, if they were to go down that route at all.

After a number of candidates were reportedly linked to the team over the past week, the Kings have finally settled on a deserving executive, one who possesses the intangibles and experience needed to hold such a high ranking position.

As first reported by Marc Spears of The Undefeated, the Kings have named Brandon Williams as the team’s new assistant GM.

More from Sacramento Kings

A former player his own right, Williams comes to Sacramento after spending the last four seasons as part of the Philadelphia 76ers. With the 76ers, Williams was tasked to build up the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware 87ers, from scratch as the team’s general manager.

Before taking on his job in Philadelphia, Williams spent nine seasons working in the league’s office under the titles of director of player development and associate vice president of basketball operations.

Earlier in the summer, Williams had also interviewed with the Atlanta Hawks in regards to their GM opening, which would later go to Travis Schlenk, former assistant GM of the Golden State Warriors.

To commemorate the announcement of Williams’ hiring, Kings GM Vlade Divac issued a statement via the team’s website:

"“We are so excited that Brandon is joining our front office team,” said Divac. “He is an experienced and talented basketball executive. His knowledge of player development and basketball operations combined with his legal skills will be a strong addition to our team.”"

Under his new role, the team noted that Williams will help take on the day-to-day operations in all areas of the organization.

While it’s not a like-for-like replacement of Perry in terms of position titles, Williams is nonetheless a worthy addition to have alongside Divac in the team’s front office. Williams’ modern NBA experience feels tailor made to keep building up an organization like the Kings from top to bottom, especially for where they stand in their current rebuild.

There’s also Williams’ drive and motivation, which he himself described best in a profile written by David Aldridge of NBA.com around the time he was interviewing with the Hawks:

"“The guy they’re getting,” he said, “is a guy that’s been competing against everybody for the past 12 years.”"

Whether the Kings will continue to fortify their front office remains to be seen, but they certainly brought in a respectable, up-and-comer in Williams.
