5. Helps Offensive Matchups

With free agency being the way it is, a lot of teams will have multiple free agents coming in, including Portland. New teammates mean that there will be growing pains as the players adjust to the system, the team, and just being in a different city. It will happen with every team. Including the Golden State Warriors.

That is where having returning players helps because the adjustment isn’t so big if the coaching staff is still there as well. Crabbe’s return means one less growing pain for Terry Stotts and his staff. Crabbe already knows all the offensive sets and his role on the team.

His return will also help the Portland Trail Blazers use him as a decoy when he runs around the three-point line. Crabbe is a three-point threat and his actions off the ball will allow the Blazers to keep the defenses from completely focusing on Damian Lillard and/or C.J. McCollum.

Allowing your two best ballhandlers the time and space to create plays is a pretty good offensive strategy. It’s not the whole strategy, but using Crabbe’s shooting threat to help their guards is a part of it. A guy like Evan Turner, who shot 24.1 percent from three last year, can’t really stretch the floor like Crabbe can.
