With the Golden State Warriors having failed to improve their roster this offseason, it raises questions about the future of star Steph Curry. With him having yet to sign a contract extension, it could make the possibility of a Curry trade more likely.
If he were to hit the trade block, the Charlotte Hornets loom as a potential landing spot. After all, he grew up in the Charlotte area, and his father, Dell Curry, had his jersey retired by the Hornets.
He also currently works as a color commentator, adding another tie to the organization. Still, the Warriors getting to the point of trading Curry still seems far-fetched.
But if he doesn't sign a contract extension this summer, then they may be forced to move on from him rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
*Note the trade cannot be completed until December 15th, 2026.
Proposed Warriors blockbuster Steph Curry trade would send him to the Hornets
The Hornets are ironically well positioned to acquire Curry after trading LaMelo Ball earlier this summer. That still ranks as a puzzling move, but it does at least give them plenty of assets to reroute to the Warriors in the event of a Curry trade.
The potential trade offer would see them ship out Naz Reid, Royce O'Neale, Grayson Allen, Dorian Finney-Smith, and three first-round picks for Curry and De'Anthony Melton.
That might not be the return that Warriors fans would hope for, but it might be the most they could reasonably expect. Reid is an above-average starting power forward, while O'Neale and Allen are both good NBA players and reliable shooters.
Golden State could keep Reid and look to re-trade O'Neal and Allen to the highest bidder. That would only increase their potential haul in a hypothetical Curry trade.
Would the Hornets and Warriors agree to the trade?
Perhaps the best comparison for a potential Curry trade is the deal to send Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. The Phoenix Suns acquired Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five round picks.
The hypothetical trade would be similar in terms of value, better even. Reid is better than any player the Suns received, Allen is a starting-caliber guard, and O'Neale is a reliable vet. Add in the picks, and it's technically a more favorable offer.
Even so, that might not matter to the Warriors, who would have to be forced to move Curry at this point. But if they do nothing to improve their team and he doesn't sign an extension, then the Hornets loom as a potential landing spot for Curry.
