NBA free agency option No. 1 for Christian Wood: Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets have cap space and a dearth of talent and would love to add an exciting young player like Christian Wood. They finished 23-42 last season but actually got lucky to finish with a record that strong as they won a disproportionate number of close games but got blown out plenty throughout the season. Per Basketball-Reference, their expected W/L was 19-46.

While Wood hasn’t proven himself to be anything but a “good stats on a bad team” kind of player, the Hornets could provide just such an opportunity. The Hornets might not be much good, but he would have the opportunity to prove himself in a young core included Miles Bridges, Devonte’ Graham and P.J. Washington.

According to Keith Smith’s salary cap pages, the Hornets project to have $19.4 million in cap space this coming offseason and throwing a bunch of it at Christian Wood might be a great idea for this young rebuilding squad.

It’s worth noting that Wood played for the Hornets in 2016-17 for a brief 13-game stint, but he’s played for five teams now in his short career as he’s bounced around the league, so it’s unlikely he’ll disqualify too many teams simply because he’s played for them before.
