The little things

During an 82-game season, teams will go through funks but as long as they can do the little things they will always come out on top anyway. Those championship-caliber Golden State Warriors teams were great at offense but what helped those teams be so great was their deceptive defensive ability.

They were consistently one of the top teams in defensive rating. This season the Clippers were fifth in defensive rating with 106.6. Scoring points is fine but playing defense is what can win championships.

They are 11th in contested 3-point shots this season. The 3-point shot is obviously the highest-value shot in basketball, so reducing the efficiency of that shot is important. If you are consistently getting up into player’s face and forcing them to pass the ball it helps you swallow teams up possession after possession.

In half-court, the Clippers help each other out and that leads to points. They are fifth in screen assists per game with 11.2 and fifth in screen assists points per game with 26.3.

Rebounding is what leads to easy points on the other end. It stops a team’s possessions and helps you control the pace of the game. Also, it helps extend your offensive possessions. You can get more scoring opportunities when you can rebound.

They are third in rebounds per game with 48.0 and in second in second-chance points with 14.4.

They can do the little things which set them apart from other teams. That, in turn, helps them win games.
