2. Trey Burke will win Sixth Man of the Year

Following a 26-game stint in the G-League, Trey Burke re-introduced himself to the NBA, thriving in New York primarily off the bench by averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 assists in only 21.8 minutes per game.

Knicks coach David Fizdale has stated that his entire starting five is up for grabs, which means Burke could technically become the full-time starter, but considering the energy and bucket-getting talent he brings to the court, the former Wolverine would be best served running the second unit.

Given the inconsistent play of New York’s other point guards, Burke will likely play a Lou Williams-type role, coming off the bench but playing big minutes as the unquestioned best floor general on the roster.

The Sixth Man of the Year award doesn’t really give extra points for winning. It’s as much about numbers as anything. Burke’s per-36 minute numbers came out to 21.1 points and 7.8 assists, which would surely make him a lock to be the league’s top sixth man.

While he’s unlikely to have that much playing time, internal improvement coupled with a more defined role and more opportunities should lead to Burke’s numbers looking a lot closer to his per-36 stats, giving him a great shot at the Sixth Man trophy.
