3. Versatile perimeter defender

In an offseason where the Rockets managed to lose both Ariza and Mbah a Moute in free agency, it was imperative they acquired a wing player on the open market. They needed someone who could defend and fit seamlessly within their overall scheme, where players are asked to switch almost every screen and defend guards out on the perimeter.

This is a skill that James Ennis possesses and has taken with him wherever he goes. The journeyman has shown the ability to stop some of the league’s top stars in their tracks throughout his first four seasons in the NBA, playing solid on-ball defense and using his physical attributes to get into the body of opponents while behind the 3-point line.

The 6’7″, 210-pound swingman can guard multiple positions, and has displayed a willingness to defend the opposing team’s primary option whenever called upon. Ennis’ presence will help the Rockets remain solid on the defensive end.

He will provide them with a solid veteran who can apply pressure consistently alongside Chris Paul and P.J. Tucker, as the three players on the floor together gives Houston a trio of rough and rugged defenders that can fly around and cause havoc at all times.

Whether Ennis starts or comes off the bench, this is one major asset he brings to the table.
