Brooklyn Nets: 5 goals for D’Angelo Russell in 2017-18
2. Average 20-5-5
In just two seasons, Russell has improved his numbers in almost every statistical category, as he posted career-best marks in points, rebounds, assists and steals during the 2016-17 regular season. However, the All-Rookie Second Team selection in 2016 has not yet had a campaign in which he has averaged at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game.
That is a goal D-Lo should strive to accomplish this season.
With Russell seeking to take over the reins at shooting guard for Brooklyn, his overall usage rate will more than likely rise, as playing off the ball will give him more of an opportunity to score and haul in more rebounds than he did with the Lakers. Posting a 20-5-5 season would give Russell the chance to show why his versatility truly stands out.
He has the talent to serve as the Nets’ secondary playmaker, as he possesses a tight enough handle to break down opposing defenders on a dime, to freeze up defenses and set up the likes of Hollis-Jefferson, Mozgov and others for easy baskets. This makes him a candidate to possibly lead the team not only in scoring, but also assists.
Russell averaged six assists per 36 minutes last season, and if he is able to produce at the level he demonstrated during the Nets’ preseason opener against the New York Knicks, then this particular feat could become a foregone conclusion sooner rather than later.
