Brooklyn Nets

After a series of ill-fated trades and management decisions, the Brooklyn Nets found themselves without a 2018 first round draft pick they could call their own. Prior to receiving Toronto’s 2018 first round pick in this deal, the Nets’ only first-rounder officially belonged to the Boston Celtics.

The Raptors’ pick is lottery-protected, but Toronto should easily make the playoffs in the Eastern conference this year. The Nets will not be receiving the same caliber of pick that they will be sending Boston’s way, but, they managed to have at least one first round selection in the 2018 draft.

More from Hoops Habit

The second round pick that the Nets will be receiving is likely to be in the later stages of the round. All draft picks hold potential value though, and the Nets now own two second-round picks in the 2018 draft. There are numerous success stories of second round draft picks having excellent careers. Going back to Nick Van Exel in 1993 all the way to current Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green, impact players can be found outside of the first-round.

DeMarre Carroll should immediately be a starter when the Brooklyn Nets begin play for the 2018 season. He should see more touches and more shot opportunities than his previous two stops in Atlanta and Toronto. In both cases, there were established All-Stars in place which limited Carroll’s role in the offense. It remains to be seen how the Nets will incorporate him and newcomers D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov. Regardless of the system though, Carroll should have a significant role.

For the Nets, this was a positive transaction which gained them a first and second round pick in 2018. The trade also brought them a veteran on a short-term contract. Carroll will be out to prove that the last two years are not representative of his capabilities. The Nets also managed to only send seldom-used Justin Hamilton to the Raptors in the exchange, which makes this deal even sweeter for Brooklyn.
