Toronto Raptors

DeMarre Carroll saw a dramatic cut in his playing time from the 2017 regular season to the playoffs. By the end of the series with the Cleveland Cavaliers, it was obvious that Carroll’s remaining time in Toronto would be short.

The Raptors had high hopes for him and as a team when they signed him away from the Atlanta Hawks in 2015. This year, the Raptors prioritized retaining point guard Kyle Lowry and forward Serge Ibaka in free agency. Once they accomplished that, DeMarre Carroll became the biggest question mark involving the roster.

More from Brooklyn Nets

Justin Hamilton is a center who appeared in 64 games for the Brooklyn Nets last year and started in seven of them. Hamilton averaged just 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game, but won’t be making an impact for the team. This is a salary dump, pure and simple.

Overall, the Toronto Raptors paid a heavy cost to part ways with DeMarre Carroll. The 2018 first-round draft pick is lottery-protected, but the Raptors will almost assuredly make the playoffs in the weakened Eastern Conference next year. The 2018 second round draft pick will most likely be in the later part of the round. Even though they are not assumed to be high draft picks, they are still valuable commodities in the NBA.

Despite the struggles that DeMarre Carroll endured in Toronto, he had a career year with the Hawks in 2015. If Carroll is able to find a resurgence in Brooklyn, this deal will look even worse for the Raptors. Even with the pending sign-and-trade for C. J. Miles, which will send another rotation player away in Cory Joseph, the Toronto Raptors have not moved any closer to the Cavaliers.
