New York Knicks PG Brandon Jennings

Unrestricted

If the Spurs don’t get a shot at Schröder, they’ll need to look at other free agents not of the restricted variety. One that could carry some intrigue next offseason is Brandon Jennings, a former top prospect who has had a bumpy career.

Jennings signed with the New York Knicks this offseason in hopes of pointing his arrow back in an upward direction. While there’s no guarantee he’ll shine in the Big Apple, an impressive showing this season could put him back on the radar when free agency rolls around.

When Jennings entered the league, many saw him as one of the NBA’s next great point guards. He flashed star-caliber abilities during his days with the Bucks, but never quite lived up to the billing. A fresh start with a well-coached team like the Spurs might help him get his groove back.

He’s put in a lot of work in recent years and appears ready to capitalize on his opportunity with the Knicks. If he can stay healthy, he should see plenty of minutes — especially with the injury-prone Derrick Rose ahead of him on the depth chart.

If he shines in 2016-17, Jennings could be an intriguing free agency option for San Antonio.
