Atlanta Hawks PG Dennis Schröder

Restricted Free Agent

Personally, I think Dennis Schröder would be an excellent fit for the Spurs. He’s an exciting young point guard who has yet to truly unlock his full potential, but he’ll get his opportunity in 2016-17.

The Hawks traded away Jeff Teague to give Schröder the chance to prove he can be the full-time starter. He’s flashed excellent abilities through three seasons, showing great defense and playmaking instincts for Atlanta. Although he’s not a great shooter and has struggled with inconsistency, the talent is there for him to emerge as a star this season.

That’s what I’m guessing will happen. I’m also guessing Schröder will opt to see what doors open during free agency. The Hawks will attempt to re-sign him, but the deal likely won’t get done before the deadline.

When he hits the open market, the Spurs would be wise to give his agent a call.

Tony Parker isn’t getting any younger, even though he does plan on playing for a few more years. With Schröder in the mix, San Antonio can start to limit Parker’s minutes and replace the production it’ll likely lose with Patty Mills set to hit free agency.

It’s an intriguing fit, and I truly believe the Spurs’ system would bring out the best in Schröder.
