Sacramento Kings, 2001-02
Record: 61-21
Lost in Western Conference Finals

The Sacramento Kings had a season of firsts in 2001-02. They won their first division title since 1979, when the team was based in Kansas City, and made the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1981, also when the Kings were still in Kansas City.

The Kings were led by the one-two punch of Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic. Webber averaged 24.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in spite of only appearing in 54 games, and Stojakovic added 21.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

The Kings beat the Utah Jazz 3-1 in the first round, the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the second round, and lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games in the Western Conference Finals.

There were allegations that Game 6 of that series, which went in favor of the Lakers behind the strength of 27 free throws in the fourth quarter, was affected by referees associated with the Tim Donaghy gambling scandal.
