Detroit Pistons, 1988-89
Record: 63-19
Won NBA championship

The Detroit Pistons battled giants in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They wrestled with the mighty Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers in the late 1980s before overcoming them on their way to an NBA title. The Pistons slayed both giants in the same postseason in 1989, sweeping the Celtics in the first round and the Lakers in the Finals.

The Pistons only lost two games in the playoffs, both of them to the up-and-coming Chicago Bulls, and recorded a 15-2 record on their way to the title. The Bad Boys could defend, giving up the third-fewest points per 100 possessions in the NBA, but they could also handle their own on offense, finishing seventh of the 25 teams in the league in offensive rating.

One of the biggest reasons that those Pistons could put the ball in the basket was Joe Dumars. Winner of that year’s NBA Finals MVP award, Joe D averaged tremendous 27.3 points per game in the Finals, followed by Isiah Thomas and his 21.3 points and 7.3 assists.
