The Sacramento Kings have have officially made key additions to their front office. What might the new additions mean to the Kings’ future?
The Sacramento Kings are one of many teams staying home this postseason, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t busy preparing for the future.
On Friday, Apr. 21, the Kings announced that they hired Scott Perry to act as the team’s Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The addition of Perry comes just a day after the team hired Luke Bornn to act as the team’s Vice President of Strategy and Analytics.
Perry comes to the Kings carrying a wealth of experience. He held positions for various front offices around the league, having stints with the Detroit Pistons, Seattle SuperSonics, and most recently, the Orlando Magic.
As part of his duties, Perry will serve under Kings general manager Vlade Divac and will help assist him with the team’s day-to-day operations. That, in particular, is where Perry’s hire may go a long way in helping the team reverse the reputation that has followed it for the last few seasons.
The Kings have been criticized for the way they have interacted with teams around the league under Divac’s tenure, in large part due to his novice experience holding key front office positions.

As a result, the Kings were reportedly looking to combat that and find help for Divac. Former Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie was a reported target of interest by the team.
Adding a more experienced executive was something that Divac even touched upon during his exit interview, saying that, “Everything is open for improvement.”
With Perry officially in the fold, the Kings now have the experience that’s needed to help build relationships with teams, players ,and agents around the league.
Meanwhile, Bornn comes to the Kings after recently serving as the head of analytics with the Italian football club, A.S. Roma. His hiring addresses the void left behind by Roland Beech, the team’s former Vice President of Basketball Results and creator of 82Games.com, who parted ways with the team earlier in the week.
Coinciding with the announcement of his hiring, Bornn spoke on what his role will be for the Kings with James Ham of NBC Sports California:

"“My role with the Kings will be all encompassing,” Bornn said. “It’s player evaluation, opponent scouting, it’s performance – with the sports science group there. We’ll be looking at all aspects, from the basics of stats, all the way to the more advanced metrics.”"
All of these changes have been incredibly encouraging to see, especially for a team that’s sorely lacked the necessary depth that’s needed to help fuel stability and positive results.
Along with that, fortifying the organization before this year’s draft couldn’t have come at a more crucial time for their ongoing rebuild.
How soon we’ll see the payoff to these new hires obviously remains to be seen at this point, but this year’s free agency will provide a good litmus test for the direction the Kings are looking to head towards.
