The Golden State Warriors' bleak off-season outlook should have them considering trading star Steph Curry, but a potential deal with the San Antonio Spurs has a clear roadblock. The Spurs have been rumored to be a potential landing spot for Curry, though that's just speculation.
On paper, they do make sense as a landing spot, with them having plenty of draft assets and quality prospects. That could entice Golden State if they finally realize that they aren't going to compete in the near future.
Unfortunately for them, a potential trade with the Spurs likely wouldn't result in them landing elite prospects Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. Both would be off the table.
The Warriors won't land Dylan Harper in a Spurs trade
Trading Curry would potentially net the Warriors significant assets but not a top prospect like Harper. After all, he may be the best guard prospect in the last five years and certainly played like it during the NBA Finals.
It's not to say that the Warriors and Spurs can't still find common ground on a trade. In a few months, things could look a lot different. Curry and the Warriors may be headed nowhere, while the Spurs may be looking to make a big trade to become a title favorite.
Other potential teams that could join the Spurs in pursuing Curry include the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets especially; Curry has plenty of ties to Charlotte and even the Hornets.
The Warriors could still receive a lot for Steph Curry
The Hornets could be an intriguing trade partner for the Warriors. They traded LaMelo Ball earlier this off-season and picked up a boatload of assets. Charlotte could make Golden State an offer they can't refuse, but only if the Warriors are willing to trade Curry.
The Celtics may also be able to cobble together a trade using some of the assets received from the Jaylen Brown deal. However, the Spurs may still be the ideal landing spot for Curry. A potential trade could see the Spurs swap De'Aaron Fox, Carter Bryant, and two first-round picks for Curry.
At the moment, that might not seem like such an enticing trade for Golden State. But if Fox has a strong start to next season, then that might increase his trade value. However, a trade between the Warriors and Spurs only happens without Harper, and Golden State realizing that they must trade Curry before it's too late.
