The Dallas Mavericks have seen their season go downhill very quickly, currently fighting to hold on to a play-in spot in the Western Conference. They are a game and a half up on the 11th seeded Phoenix Suns with seven games left, but anything can happen down the stretch.
Much has been made about the Mavs’ decision to trade Luka Doncic and the injuries to their star players like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, but through it all, Dallas has been able to see young players take advantage of the increased opportunity.
Point guard Brandon Williams has been one of the lone bright spots for the Dallas Mavericks.
With Kyrie Irving out for the season and Doncic donning the Purple and Gold, the Mavs needed a guard that would step up and lead the offense. Williams has done that and more in his extended audition. He originally signed a couple 10-day deals with the team and then a two-way, but has played himself into earning a standard NBA deal.
Williams has been a revelation for Dallas and is having the best stretch of his young career. For the month of March, he is averaging about 17 points per game, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals on 54 percent shooting.
Williams is also shooting 38 percent on above-the-break threes and 64 percent at the rim, showcasing improved efficiency in those areas. His ability to slash and playmake has allowed for the Mavericks offense to remain afloat post-Luka trade and amidst all of their injuries up and down the roster.
Dallas has a decision to make regarding Williams’ contract, as two-way contracts place limitations on the amount of games he can play with the club and he has outperformed it.
With the Mavericks not having control of their draft picks beyond 2026 and their need to hit on young players and players on bargain contracts, Williams fills that perfectly. If they sign him to a standard deal now, they could have him at a discount for the next two or three seasons and watch him continue to grow as a player.
Dallas has made a lot of mistakes lately, but finding Williams has not been one of them. He has shown that he is more than capable as not only a starter, but as a backup point guard. They need to sign him before they lose him to another team.
