NBA Rumors: Ben Simmons for Jerami Grant trade in “discussions”
By Jack Simone
NBA rumors run wild all season, and this year, Ben Simmons has found himself in plenty of them. In this case, Detroit Pistons star Jerami Grant is attached to them as well.
Ever since the playoffs concluded last season, Ben Simmons has been thrown around in trade rumors on a daily basis. He has yet to play a game for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, and it doesn’t seem as though anything is changing on that front.
His agent, Rich Paul, has claimed that Philadelphia has done nothing but worsen Simmons’ mental health, while the organization claims that they have been nothing but supportive. The whole situation is a mess, to say the least.
A recent rumor suggested that the 76ers have a list of 30 players they would be willing to trade Simmons. Well, one of those names may have just been released to the public.
NBA Rumors: 76ers have discussed Ben Simmons for Jerami Grant trade
Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer put out an article revealing two players on Philadelphia’s list. The first was James Harden, which is both unrealistic and not surprising at all. The second? Jerami Grant.
Pompey went on to detail what that potential trade would look like:
"The team has engaged in ongoing discussions with the Detroit Pistons to acquire Grant, another forward, a young player, and a draft pick in exchange for Simmons, league sources said. One source said power forward/center Kelly Olynyk and second-year swingman Saddiq Bey were mentioned as players who could be included in a possible deal. However, a source said the Pistons are unlikely to include Bey, a Villanova product, or Olynyk. The team has engaged in ongoing discussions with the Detroit Pistons to acquire Grant, another forward, a young player, and a draft pick in exchange for Simmons, league sources said. Detroit parting ways with Bey this early in his career seems very unlikely. However, if they have the opportunity, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Olynyk included in a deal for Simmons.
Grant would obviously be the centerpiece of any trade the Pistons and 76ers get done. The 27-year-old power forward is in his second season with Detroit and was a Most Improved Player candidate last year.
This season, Jerami Grant is averaging 18.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 30.9 percent from deep.
While his shooting splits may be down, his impact on the court is undeniable. On the 76ers, he would likely be their third option, which seems like the perfect situation for him.
Philadelphia said they would also be asking for another forward and a young player (as well as a pick) in a deal. While it’s unclear which players they are targeting, a combination of Josh Jackson and Hamidou Diallo fits that bill well.
Detroit would be pairing Simmons with Cade Cunningham, Isaiah Stewart, and (probably) Bey for the future. That’s a solid young core moving forward.
Obviously, no trade has gotten done yet, but this is simply another rumor to add to the pile. Keep the Pistons in the back of your minds as this Ben Simmons situation plays out.
