Miami Heat offseason signing No. 5: Dewayne Dedmon

One of the biggest issues for the Heat last season was their lack of production at the backup center position. They drafted Precious Achiuwa for the role but he was not ready to be the backup big for a team looking to get back into the finals.

This led to the Heat going out and signing Dewayne Dedmon to play the backup minutes behind one of the team’s stars, Bam Adebayo. Like the Utah Jazz found out, when your primary big man goes to the bench and the backup is not up to it, the team cannot compete against the best.

There were times when Dedmon looked out of sync with the offense but that is going to be expected when you sign with less than 20 games to go in the season. However, as the season drew near its close,  Dedmon showed that he has the true potential to help this team.

All that he needs to do on offense is set good picks, role to the hoop, and help clean up the offensive glass. Defensively he just needs to clog up the paint and own the defensive glass. These are all skills that Dedmon possesses and can employ for the benefit of the Heat.
