During Game 3 of the Milwaukee Bucks’ first-round series against the Miami Heat, shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo suffered a torn ligament in his left ankle that sidelined him for the remainder of the playoffs. Team doctors are yet to provide a timetable for his return. DiVincenzo could often be seen in the starting lineups in the backcourt next to point guard Jrue Holiday. At the beginning of next season, he may very well be courtside in street clothes.

Prior to last season, there was an ongoing debate as to whether DiVincenzo or Bryn Forbes should be the starting shooting guard for the team. While DiVincenzo ultimately won the competition, Forbes’ contribution should not be overlooked. He became a valuable shooter in the second unit, knocking down 45.2 percent of his attempts from 3-point land over the course of the season. Unfortunately for Bucks fans, Forbes declined his player option for next season and returned to the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent.

The injury to Donte DiVincenzo and the offseason departure of Bryn Forbes means there should be less competition for Grayson Allen to become the Bucks’ starting shooting guard by the end of training camp. Pat Connaughton will be a challenger for the role, but besides being a better dunker than the former Blue Devil, Connaughton does not bring as much to the table as Allen does. Grayson is joining the team right on time to play a valuable role that may have been shared by the committee if it were not for his presence.
