Detroit Pistons offseason move No. 1: Do not guarantee Cory Joseph’s deal.

Thanks to the remaining $29.0 million of Griffin’s deal the Pistons have more than $100.0 million in salary for next season on their books. The Pistons can save themselves $12.6 million if they do not guarantee Cory Joseph.

At 29, he is at the wrong end of the Pistons timeline for this rebuild. They need to gather in players that they can develop in their system with their young core of rookies Bey, Stewart, and Hayes. On top of that, they have to work with  Grant so that the Pistons can assess the talent.

Joseph was serviceable for the Pistons once he came across via trade. He averaged 12.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks in 26.4 minutes per game. He started 11 of his 19 games played, which does not fit into the plans for the Pistons.

They are looking at Hayes to be their point guard of the future and therefore, with at least another season of growth and development, he will hopefully take another leap forward. With Joseph on the team, Hayes will not get the opportunity the Pistons need him to have. It would be better if the Pistons had a low-cost veteran point guard who can mentor Hayes.
