Worst NBA Draft pick Atlanta Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk has made: Trae Young

It only makes sense to start this off with perhaps the spiciest take on the list. Travis Schlenk has not been at this for very long, taking over as general manager in May 2017. The argument for the Trae Young pick being the worst made by Schlenk will be made for the rest of his career: he is not Luka Doncic.

Opportunity cost matters in the context of the worst draft pick made and passing up on a potential MVP for an All-Star talent is a mistake. Trae Young is great but does not profile as the type of player that will be the best player on a championship team. That is not meant as a slight, as there are very few of them historically in the league. But when you have the chance to draft one and instead trade back to bring in an additional pick that turns into Cam Reddish, that is the type of choice that can change a franchise for a decade.

Without taking opportunity into consideration, there have certainly been worse players drafted by Travis Schlenk but this is the pick that will define his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. No matter how big a fan of Trae Young you are, there is no way to call that the right choice.
