Assets to make the deal

The Cleveland Cavaliers know that a big man who doesn’t want to take 3-pointers and takes pride in leading the league in rebounding is rare in the present era. That being said, they’ve publicly stated that they are not willing to part ways with Andre Drummond for less than he’s worth. Luckily for the Milwaukee Bucks, they’re capable of putting together a package that should be appealing to Cleveland’s front office.

In a league where good 3-point shooting is a highly sought after commodity, Sam Merrill is getting little to no playing time for the Milwaukee Bucks. As a rookie, he’s probably happy to play for a contender and learn from a veteran like Jrue Holiday. However, as an athlete he has to be frustrated with getting another “DNP, coach’s decision.” In a very limited sample size this season, Merrill is shooting 45.5 percent from 3-point ranger. Given more attempts, his percentage probably won’t stay that high, but he’s proven he has the ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc.

DJ Wilson is a 6’11” power forward on the last year of his rookie contract. Playing behind Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis and Brook Lopez, he hasn’t seen many minutes in Milwaukee’s rotation this season. Wilson is still young and with the right amount of confidence and hard work he could become a valuable role player. Cleveland could also be enticed by the ability to allow Wilson to become a free agent at the end of the season, which would free up cap space.

Veteran wing player, Torrey Craig, is in a similar situation to Wilson. Having signed a one-year deal with Milwaukee this past off-season, things have not panned out the way both parties initially hoped. Craig has seen limited minutes in Coach Budenholzer’s rotation. Adding his soon-to-be off the books contract in a package for Drummond could make the deal even more enticing for Cleveland.
