A long-term solution at center for the Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks already have a dependable veteran starting at center. Brook Lopez has a great rapport with Giannis Antetokounmpo, he has the trust of him teammates, and Coach Mike Budenholzer knows what to expect from him on a nightly basis. The addition of Andre Drummond would not be an indictment of Lopez, but rather a diagnosis of a shortage at the position.

After Lopez the next center in the rotation is Bobby Portis. Portis is a solid player but the truth is he’s more of a power forward who can play center when called upon. The only other option at center is DJ Wilson. He’s had a disappointing season and all signs indicate that he is not a part of the team’s long-term plans. Not only would adding Drummond to the team give Milwaukee more depth at the position, it would also allow Coach Budenholzer to be more creative with the lineup.

Brook Lopez is 32. By no means does that make him an old man, but his best days as a player are behind him. Andre Drummond, on the other hand, is only 27 and in his prime right now. For the foreseeable future, Lopez will remain the starting center. However, Drummond’s presence could see Lopez moved to the second unit, which would make his ability to step out to 3-point territory that much more valuable.

Having an elite rebounder and tough interior presence like Drummond will also take pressure of of Antetokounmpo. Big defenders will have to stay home on Drummond instead of being able to clog the paint when Giannis gets the ball. If they decide to double team, a nice drop off pass for an easy Drummond slam will have them rethinking that decision on the next possession.
