LA Clippers: Trade target No. 4 – Lonzo Ball, New Orleans Pelicans

Between Lonzo Ball, Eric Bledsoe, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kira Lewis, and J.J. Redick, the New Orleans Pelicans are jam-packed in that backcourt. If they are looking to make some moves to clear out this logjam, they will likely not have to wait long.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania ($$), teams are calling New Orleans about Ball and Redick’s availability, and the Pelicans have expressed openness in trading both. With Lonzo reportedly on the market, the LA Clippers could look to bring in a premier facilitator at the point guard position.

Ball’s passing ability was undoubtedly his strongest attribute throughout his first three seasons in the league, averaging a combined 6.6 assists per game. This year, however, his numbers have nosedived significantly, currently dishing out just 4.7 assists per contest. Part of this regression can be attributed to the team’s overcrowded backcourt, and Ball could certainly be in the market for a change of scenery.

The Clippers would give him an opportunity on a top-tier contender that desperately needs a player with his skillset. Playing alongside the likes of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George could elevate his game and continue his development. The 23-year-old will make $11 million this season before he is eligible to enter restricted free agency, making him another affordable option for LA to consider.
