Fred VanVleet: 4 years, $85 million (Toronto Raptors)
The Toronto Raptors paid up for their guy, re-signing NBA champion Fred VanVleet to a four-year, $85 million contract. Considering some of the numbers tossed around in speculation for VanVleet, $21 million per season might not be a bargain but it’s certainly more than fair for both sides.
VanVleet gets to stay in the city where he won a championship (although his Raptors will begin the coming season playing in Tampa Bay) and he has a player option in that fourth year. This contract also shouldn’t infringe much into the Raptors’ plans on wooing Giannis Antetokoumpo to Canada in free agency next year.
Even without Kawhi Leonard, the centerpiece for the Raptors’ championship team, they had one of the best records in the NBA last season and at this point should be considered a perennial threat to make the Eastern Conference Finals at the very least. A big part of that continued success was Fred VanVleet, and he’s going to be a major piece for them for the next several years as well.
I love this deal for both sides and have no choice but to grade thusly:
