Sacramento Kings Trade Chip #5: Cory Joseph

While Cory Joseph may not be an attractive name when it comes to trade rumors or speculation, the 29-year-old point guard could potentially garner some interest due to his skill set.

Joseph is a nine-year veteran who just finished his first season in Sacramento. He has two seasons remaining on his current contract which will pay him a hefty $12.6 million per, something that may make it difficult to garner any solid return.

But Joseph could potentially be a chip in a bigger deal as a straight-up trade would be unlikely. He is known for his defensive abilities, which could make him attractive to contenders who need help guarding the league’s elite point guards. He has extensive playoff experience, including time with the Pacers, Raptors, and Spurs. If the Kings hold on to Joseph in to the 2021 season, he may be a mildly sought-after commodity for a desperate team at the trade deadline.

Perhaps the team that inquires about Buddy Hield will be looking for some defensive insurance, though the salary cap hit would likely deter that possibility. Joseph’s contract will make him a difficult piece to move, but McNair and the Kings’ front office should do all they can to take that money off of the books.
