LA Clippers: 3 reasons to pursue a Derrick Rose trade – He is affordable

The LA Clippers would undoubtedly like to get their hands on someone like Goran Dragic or Fred VanVleet this offseason, but they simply do not have the financial flexibility to make that work. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George making approximately $35 million each next season, free agency is not going to be a viable option for the Clippers.

On top of that, the team famously traded a historic haul of draft capital to the Oklahoma City Thunder last year to land Paul George. Deprived of any draft picks over the next several seasons, the Clippers front office is going to have to get creative in trying to retool this roster in the offseason.

Derrick Rose is on the books for just $7 million next season, making him well within any team’s price range. For the Clippers, the challenging part might be putting together an enticing package with their limited assets to pry the guard away from the Detroit Pistons, but it is possible.

A swap involving Landry Shamet and Rodney McGruder for Rose works financially but whether that would be enough to land the 3-time All-Star is certainly in question. LA’s general manager Lawrence Frank recently took home this season’s Executive of the Year honors and could potentially put together something to sweeten the deal if Rose is on the table.
