LA Clippers: 3 reasons to pursue a Derrick Rose trade
By Dalton Sell
The LA Clippers could be in the market for an upgrade at point guard this offseason, and former league MVP Derrick Rose could help.
After blowing a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Semi-Finals, the LA Clippers have been in the news headlines for all the wrong reasons. Looking to put their disastrous postseason collapse in the rearview, the team must now focus on how to improve heading into next season.
According to ESPN’s Stephen A Smith, one of their stars is calling on the team to bring in a point guard to kick off the changes:
"“They clearly need a point guard. Everybody knows it, and Kawhi Leonard privately has clamored for one. It’s not that he wants them to get rid of Patrick Beverley, but Patrick Beverley is basically a defensive ace who’s small and has to play opposing guards. So they need a point guard that can run a team and can shoot.”"
One feasible option could be Derrick Rose, who spent the 2019-20 campaign with the Detroit Pistons. Rose, 32, was one of the most highly coveted pieces on the trade market throughout last season, and there were even rumblings at one point that the Clippers were interested in him. Although nothing ever came of it, the team should rekindle that interest if they intend to target a point guard this offseason.
Near the trade deadline, Rose was seen as a player that could tip the needle for a contender, and it is clear to see why. In 50 games this season, the former league MVP averaged 18.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game with .490/.306/.871 shooting splits, putting together one of his finer seasons in recent memory. Diving deeper into the fit, here are three reasons that the LA Clippers should pursue a Derrick Rose trade this offseason.
