New York Knicks: 5 worst FA signings in team history
4. Eddy Curry (6 years, $60 million)
Signing Eddy Curry was the most sublime move that Isiah Thomas made during his tenure with the New York Knicks. Baby Shaq was supposed to be the next great Knick big man, following the footsteps of Willis Reed and Patrick Ewing.
Even though Curry possessed a kind of skillset that does not grow on trees, his unfortunate heart problems prevented him from taking his next steps towards stardom. The consensus top player in the 2001 draft class was, consequently, on his way out of Chicago.
The New York Knicks took a huge gamble on Curry. They offered him a pretty hefty contract that initially looked like a fine deal. His first couple of seasons in Madison Square Garden were quite nice, averaging 15.7 points and 6 rebounds per game.
That was when problems started to pile up. His work rate dropped significantly, he gained an enormous amount of weight, leading to numerous knee injuries that would put an early end to his NBA career.
What followed next, was a series of seasons where the Knicks paid for Curry’s entire salary, while he recovered from injury after injury. They were finally able to free themselves from the Eddy Curry contract, by using him in the Carmelo Anthony trade to balance the salaries.
