2. Observe minutes limit

Derrick Rose’s best minutes this past season were when he was observing his early-season minutes limit. As the season wore on, it did become more difficult to stick to any kind of restrictions because the horrid injury luck for just about every contributor on the roster necessitated his increased load.

This time around, between the players that get put around Rose and his own rigid standards, there needs to be a limit and it must be strictly adhered to. He held up better than expected but that was almost entirely because of his restriction. When he played more, he got hurt. Every time.

For a variety of reasons (including Goal No. 3 coming up next), Rose needs to stay on the active and healthy roster next season. He needs to be able to stay in the locker room as “The Vet”, he needs to perform well for both his own and his team’s ends, and you simply don’t want your most reliable scorer to get unnecessarily overworked and hurt.

Between Rose and head coach Dwane Casey, the duo was far too willing to stray into the grey area above the minutes restriction before finally doing away with it entirely for about three games before the inevitable happened. That can’t happen this season.
