Detroit Pistons: 3 goals for Derrick Rose in 2020-21
By Duncan Smith
Derrick Rose was one of the best-performing Detroit Pistons this season, and his continued presence could pay dividends. Here are his goals for next season.
Something the Detroit Pistons are famous for is acquiring aging superstars long, long after their prime has faded. Whether it be Chris Webber or Tracy McGrady, it’s an organization that collects them like trading cards. You could be forgiven to think that’s what would happen when they signed Derrick Rose last summer, but you would be wrong.
It wasn’t a perfect season for Rose and some late-game foibles will be hard to forget, but he gave the Pistons an element they haven’t reliably had in quite some time: A go-to ball-handler who could get buckets just about any time he wanted.
Rose had a good season, but there are hints of how he could do even better next season. We’ll take a look at three goals for him.
3. Be the vet
One of the reasons the Pistons were reluctant to trade Rose at last season’s trade deadline was because of his positive influence on the young players in their locker room. In a growing youth movement surge, it’s becoming more important to provide steady veteran leadership, and between Rose and Blake Griffin, the Detroit Pistons are betting they have just the right combination.
Aside from his play on the floor, it’s vital for Rose to provide the youngsters with direction and support as he attempts to lead by example. He’s wildly popular among the youth on the team, and in a lot of ways, what he says goes. He’ll need to utilize that to his best ability.
