1. Draft well

With the weak free agent class of 2020, the best way for a team to get ahead in this offseason is the NBA draft. As mentioned earlier, the Pistons have only the seventh pick and no second-round pick. As a result, they need to make it count.

Last season the Pistons started with two quality point guards on their roster, Derrick Rose and Reggie Jackson. Thanks to Jackson’s injury, Rose took on the lion’s share of the work at the point. The problem with that is Rose has had an injury-plagued career and is 32 years old.

As a result, the Pistons need to cement this position in the draft. If he is still available they should select Tyrese Haliburton out of Iowa State. He is a really good size at 6’5″ and had the sixth-best assist rate of all high-major underclassmen.

During the 2019-20 college season, Haliburton averaged 15.2 points, 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. His length and reading of the game allow Halliburton to be a solid defender at the point.

His shooting was exceptional in his last season with Iowa State with a slash line of .504./409/.822 and these numbers would be close to a very select group of NBA players. He looks like a player who has the potential for a very long NBA career.
