Scoring prospect

My favorite prospects with high scoring potential in the 20+ draft range happen to be guards in this coming draft. Some of the best scorers in college this past season included Markus Howard, Payton Pritchard, and Elijah Hughes to name a few, each of which finished among the top 50 in the nation in scoring per game for the 2019-20 season.

More from Hoops Habit

But I want to focus on Jahmi’us Ramsey and Devon Dotson here for the 23rd slot. My only issue with Howard and Pritchard is their age and short stature, while for Hughes, despite being a 6”6’ junior, his shooting percentages this season were noticeably lower in losses and against strong competition, suggesting he could struggle in the NBA.

For anybody whose never seen Ramsey of Texas Tech play before, he’s a 6”4’ freshman guard that can score at every level. He averaged 15 points per game on only 44.2 percent shooting this past season, but he shot an astounding 42.6 percent from behind the 3-point line. Ramsey reminds me a lot of Eric Gordon. Consistent shooting from range. A fluent shooting motion off the catch or dribble. Strong for a young guard.

The Nuggets are likely set at the guard spots for years to come between Gary Harris and Jamal Murray, but Ramsey should be able to provide a solid scoring punch off the bench and could possibly even grow as one of their successors.

Devon Dotson, the 6”2’ point guard out of Kansas is another possible option for the Nuggets in this upcoming draft. Dotson is extremely quick off the dribble and excels at finishing around the rim, but I’m not convinced of his shooting ability. He averaged 18.1 points per game on 46.8 percent shooting from the field and 30.9 percent shooting from 3 this past season. His lack of perimeter shooting is why I believe he’ll still be on the board around the 23rd selection, however, I don’t think he would be as good of a fit in Denver since he doesn’t shoot it as well as Ramsey.
