Free agency is a big aspect of team-building, but not every free agent signing in Toronto Raptors history has paid off for the franchise.

When’s the last time the Toronto Raptors made a big free agency splash? If it feels like it’s been a few years, it has been.

Just last summer, the team’s big free agent signings consisted of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson, neither of whom have proven to be big-time contributors during the 2019-20 season. The year before, they made a big move by trading for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. But the only big move they made in free agency was signing Greg Monroe, who didn’t even last the year with the team.

One would have to go back to July 2017 to find the last time the Raptors handed out a free agent contract that crossed into the eight-digit category. That’s when the team signed C.J. Miles to a three-year, $25 million contract. He proved to be a decent contributor before being dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Marc Gasol deal at last year’s trade deadline.

Overall, free agency has been a mixed bag for the Raptors. The team’s mistakes have been few and far between, but there haven’t been many overwhelming successes either. None of last year’s key title pieces came over to the team on veteran free agent contracts.

While there haven’t been any truly bad contracts doled out recently, Toronto has not been immune from a bad deal or several over their brief history. Here are the six worst free agent signings in Raptors history. (Contract information courtesy of Spotrac.)
