Buddy Hield

An under-the-radar name that we could see move this offseason is shooting guard Buddy Hield.

His restricted free agency was scheduled for this summer, and all signs were pointing to a divorce between himself and the Sacramento Kings. Things got as far as Hield publicly criticizing the team for not wanting to meet his asking price on a new deal.

Eventually, he and the Kings agreed to a four-year extension worth $94 million. But unfortunately for Sacramento, it wasn’t the end of their saga with the 27-year-old guard.

First-year head coach Luke Walton made the decision to bench Hield after a January loss to the Detroit Pistons, in favor of Bogdan Bogdanovic, another soon-to-be free agent. It’s unlikely that the Kings will be able to keep both under contract or happy in regard to Hield.

Still, the guard is coming off a season where he averaged: 19.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists on an efficient 43/39/85 shooting split. He’s under contract for $24 million next year, and his salary decreases each season following through the 2023-2024 season.

And even if the Nets resign Joe Harris, both players would be interchangeable between the two and three slots. Per Basketball-Reference, Hield spent 21 percent of his minutes this season at small forward.
