Evaluating the Washington Wizards stance in the buyout market
Absolutely Not
Some possible realities you can go ahead and rule out: an Isaiah Thomas reunion, a Dion Waiters mercy signing, or Darren Collison deciding to change his mind again, come out of retirement, and turn down the Los Angeles teams for Washington.
Washington shouldn’t have any interest in bringing back a veteran point guard they traded just days ago, and Waiters is what you’d call a ‘poor culture’ fit for this young team. Collison, well, he’s decided the retirement life suits him best, for now.
Headed for a Contender
The most sensible option for Washington’s buyout interest is Turner, who’s only 31-years old and a versatile defender. He was most recently traded from the Atlanta Hawks to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where the expectation is that the two sides will agree to a buyout.
With the Hawks, Turner averaged 3.3 points and 2 assists per game.
Having him as an extra body to throw at Giannis Antetokounmpo and company would certainly come in handy for the league’s worst defense.
The only issue is that Turner will no doubt have suitors with a more promising immediate future, with a potential reunion with the Boston Celtics already being rumored.
Then there’s point guard Reggie Jackson, who would be an immediate upgrade offensively over Shabazz Napier and Ish Smith. Jackson’s currently experiencing a resurgence with the Detroit Pistons, having returned from season-long injury just weeks ago.
In his 12 games played with the Pistons, he’s averaging 15.8 points and 4.8 assists per game. Unfortunately, Jackson is another example of a name that’s already been rumored to be suited by top teams like the LA Clippers.
