4. Phoenix Suns win shoot out with New Orleans Pelicans (March 16)
It’s not often you see an NBA team put up 136 points and still the lose the game. But that’s exactly what happened to the New Orleans Pelicans took to their home court on March 16.
The Phoenix Suns gutted out an overtime win over the hometown Pelicans 138-136, despite nine New Orleans players reaching double-digit scoring in the game. Leading the way in the win was Devin Booker, who piled in a team-high 40 points and 13 assists.
The guard was also responsible for scoring or assisting on 17 of Phoenix’s last 22 points in both regulation and overtime.
Though what made the win so special was it coming in such a back-and-forth affair.
Not only did Phoenix need a pair of late game shots to tie things up with New Orleans, but the team also caught a lucky break when Pelicans’ coach Alvin Gentry got called for a technical with under two seconds remaining on the clock. Booker’s free throw would put the Suns up for good and secure the high-scoring victory for the Suns.
