Detroit Pistons: 3 breakout candidates to look out for in 2019-20
1. Derrick Rose
Of course, Derrick Rose made this list because the Detroit Pistons gathered a gem in free agency. Clearly, this isn’t the 2010-11 MVP but the Pistons acquired a wiser and more skilled version of D-Rose.
Again, Rose probably won’t come out and average 25 points per game but he will impact this team immediately. Last season, he turned back the clock and reminded people that he has plenty of basketball left. He went on two score, 50 points in a 128-125 win against the Utah Jazz in October and 33 points against the Pistons in a December 129-123 overtime loss.
Rose only played 51 games last season due to injury but his production made up for the time missed. In the 2018-19 season, he averaged 18 points, 4.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and shot a career-high 37 percent from 3.
Last season was the first time Rose averaged 18 or more points since his 2016-17 season with the New York Knicks. Over the years he has worked on his shooting, shot selection, approach to the game and limiting his dependency on his athleticism.
The 6-foot-3 guard is poised for a breakout season because of his improved shooting, explosion, and ability to breakdown the defense. Also, the addition of D-Rose forces Reggie Jackson to step up and take care of his body.
Jackson is entering the final year of his contract and the fact that the Pistons signed Rose and Fraizer could motivate the franchise to ship off their starting point guard.
If healthy Rose will be able to compete for a starting role or significant minutes on the team. Either way, this was a brilliant low-risk, high-reward signing for the Pistons.
As the beginning of the season continues to approach the organization should be ecstatic. The Detroit Pistons have a young core, expiring contracts, two building blocks and the possibility to make the playoffs again if their roster remains healthy.
