Detroit Pistons: 5 bargain bin targets in 2019 NBA free agency
4. Trey Burke
Trey Burke isn’t an elite marksman, athlete or particularly strong in any one area. However, he is a very solid option off the bench as a secondary ball-handler. He’s been a steady player throughout his career on both ends of the floor. He’s exactly what you’re looking for as a second unit point guard. The team has Jackson and Bruce Brown Jr. as its current point guards, but could use another depth piece behind them.
Burke has a career 34.0 percent mark from 3-point range, and has averaged 5.5 assists per 36 minutes. The major key for him will be remaining healthy. He has never played a full 82 games, and his games played have steadily decreased over the last three or four seasons. The Pistons got lucky when Jackson remained healthy all of last year, but there is no guarantee that he does that again this year. They need to know that Burke is available if Jackson goes down.
Burke made less than $2 million last season, and he didn’t perform well enough to command a deal that will pay him much more than that next year. They could likely sign him using the trade exception they created for $2.5 million when they traded Reggie Bullock away to the Los Angeles Lakers at the deadline. If he wants more than that, they could find some other point guard options on the market.
