3. Getting involved in bigger trades

Rumors around the Magic acquiring any talent have been minimal other than Dennis Smith Jr., who was recently traded to the New York Knicks. Still, there are still deals they could get involved in.

Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans and his “will he, won’t he?” move to the Los Angeles Lakers has dominated headlines since his intentions not to re-up with the Pelicans were made public. To this point, none of the big offers from the Lakers has been enough to get the deal done.

This is where somebody like the Magic could come in. Lonzo Ball is one such player who has been mentioned in any potential deal, with his father LaVar Ball claiming that he’d prefer to see his son sent to the Phoenix Suns instead.

Orlando isn’t Phoenix, but the Magic’s need for a point guard may be more dire than their Western counterparts. If Ball were to land in Orlando and somebody like Aaron Gordon or Jonathan Isaac went to New Orleans, would that be such a bad thing?

The Magic’s frontcourt logjam has been well documented, while a player like Gordon could be the kind to get the deal over the line for New Orleans. If giving up young talent doesn’t seem appealing, the Magic also have expiring contracts in the form of Terrence Ross and All-Star Nikola Vucevic to work with as well.

If it could get them a player like a Ball, who ordinarily wouldn’t be available, this is an avenue worth exploring as the hours tick by.
