1. Continue to develop the young core
The front office has done a good job of constructing a young core full of talent. Now, it’s up to the coaching staff to cultivate that talent. No player’s development is more important than that of forward Lauri Markkanen.
The young Finnish forward is the ideal stretch-4 in today’s game and has an array of skills that should lead to an All-Star appearance in the near future. Last season, Markkanen averaged 15.2 points per game while shooting 43.4 percent from the field.
In an earlier article, I outlined three lofty goals for Markkanen for the new season. While it may be difficult, Markkanen has an opportunity to dramatically improve his shooting percentage, which included 36.2 percent from long range.
It’ll be important for both Carter and Chandler Hutchison to establish consistent minutes in the rotation, regardless of starting status. Carter should average 28-30 minutes a game and Hutchison, who should play a key role as Parker’s direct backup at the 3, should earn 20-22 minutes per game.
The coaching staff will need to juggle minutes for Denzel Valentine and Bobby Portis as key reserves off the bench. Both young players will serve in key roles for the Bulls this season.
While Cameron Payne should be the primary backup point guard behind Kris Dunn to start the season, Valentine may find some minutes available as the primary ball-handler with the second unit.
Portis brings energy and tenacity off the bench, in addition to a scoring prowess. Last season served as somewhat of a breakout season for the Arkansas product, as he averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The 6’11” forward will look to improve those numbers and could be a candidate to shoot 40 percent from 3-point range.
This year, look for the Bulls to develop Rawle Alkins at the G League level on a two-way deal. He’s yet another undrafted player the team is high on.
This season should be an exciting one for fans. The debate is still on regarding how many wins they will finish with, but there is no doubt that the team is regaining interest levels around Bulls nation. If Chicago is successful in carrying out these five goals, the future may look even rosier.
