Boston Celtics: 3 goals for Jayson Tatum in 2018-19
1. Build off last year’s success
Tatum very well could have won the Rookie of the Year award. Between Simmons, Mitchell and Tatum, there wasn’t really a bad choice. They all had their reasons for winning the award. Any other year, Tatum could’ve won the award.
In any case, Tatum had a good season. How good? Just take a look at some of these incredible plays that he was able to put together, many of which suggest he’s just scratching the surface of his potential.
It’s not often that you see players able to do some of the things he can do at age 20. The future is bright for him, especially with how great he was in the playoffs — his first NBA postseason.
It’s not uncommon to see young players struggle in the postseason, but not Tatum. He averaged 18.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game. With no Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, players had to step up and Tatum answered the call.
He did struggle a bit shooting the ball, only converting 32.4 percent of his 3.7 attempts per game from 3. That number should go up from next season, however.
If the regular season and postseason were anything to consider, Tatum’s career looks to be on the fast-track to stardom. Next season, the sophomore needs to continue to work on his 3-point game, work on defense and build off a great rookie season. If he can do that, his second year should be even better.
