Phoenix Suns: 3 big questions heading into 2018-19 NBA season
By Luke Swiatek
1. Who is the second fiddle?
Assuming Devin Booker stays relatively healthy (fingers crossed), he should easily be the team’s primary offensive option and top scorer. However, the hierarchy behind him is completely jumbled.
T.J. Warren was second on the team in scoring last year, and there’s definitely a chance he’s second again, assuming he’s not traded. If head coach Igor Kokoskov starts Josh Jackson and Trevor Ariza on the wings instead of Warren though, it’ll be tough for him to get enough minutes to put up enough numbers.
Speaking of Josh Jackson, he’s a year older, and could be ready to take a sophomore leap. He’ll certainly get the opportunity to; out of every Suns player who played more than 100 minutes last year, Jackson was second in usage rate (26.0 percent) to only Booker himself (31.7 percent).
Deandre Ayton is also in the fold now, and he certainly figures to get a lot of touches. He’ll be vying for Rookie of the Year and trying to discover what kind of center he is, and the first overall pick in the draft is obviously going to spend a lot of time with the ball in his hands.
Even Brandon Knight could be in the running for second-leading scorer. He has performed best when he’s a focal point of an offense, and maybe he’ll regain his Milwaukee Bucks form after coming back from a torn ACL.
Maybe Booker’s top sidekick will end up being someone else entirely. It could be someone acquired from a trade, or maybe a young player like Mikal Bridges, Elie Okobo or Dragan Bender develops rapidly. Most likely though, it’ll be one of Warren, Jackson, Ayton, or Knight.
