Orlando Magic: What the 2018-19 lineups could look like
By Chris Murch
Best second unit
- PG: Jerian Grant
- SG: Terrence Ross
- SF: Jonathon Simmons
- PF: Jarell Martin
- C: Mohamed Bamba
Magic fans should be excited for the potential of the bench play in Orlando this season. While there is a clog of wings on the roster right now, this means that in the second unit, there shouldn’t be too much of a drop-off. Although I think Fournier should be included with this group, for the sake of being realistic, plugging Terrence Ross and Simmons here makes sense.
This group can both score and defend, and when you add new forward Jarell Martin to the mix, who averaged 7.7 points in only 22.9 minutes a game last season, you get more of that. This is also the group where we will be able to see Bamba flex some of his offensive skills.
Bamba has been working diligently since his time at the University of Texas to add a consistent jump shot to his game and be able to stretch the floor. When he runs with the first group, we will probably see more rim-running and paint play. With the second unit, anticipate a little more free-flowing energy and risks taken. This is the time we will really get to see who Bamba is on offense and what he potentially could be as well.
Another reason to be excited for this group is to see potential X-factor Jonathon Simmons be the go-to scoring option of the second unit. While last year was an up-and-down year, Simmons will have the ability to shine in a sixth man role. The Magic’s bench is going to cause a lot of problems for other teams and I expect them to be in the top half of the league in bench scoring next season.
