J.J. Redick: 1 year, $12-13 million (Philadelphia 76ers)
When the Philadelphia 76ers fell short in the LeBron James sweepstakes, it became imperative they brought back sharpshooter J.J. Redick, who had a career year on his lucrative one-year pact last season. The Sixers will be hoping for a similar result in 2018-19, where a slight one-year overpay is rewarded by solid veteran play. The move also leaves the team with somewhere between $13-14 million in cap space to make more moves.
Despite turning 34 last month, Redick was a huge boon for Philly’s 52-win season both on and off the court. He averaged a career-high 17.1 points per game, dishing out 3.0 assists a night as well. Most importantly, he spread the floor for a non-shooting point forward like Ben Simmons, canning 42 percent of his triples while posting career highs in 3-point attempts and makes per game.
Redick was a tremendous veteran influence for this group of talented youngsters, and will help guide the Sixers for at least another year as they continue their ascent up the Eastern Conference ladder. Floor-spacing is a necessity for Simmons and the 76ers’ offense, so shy of making a blockbuster trade for Kawhi Leonard, this is the best move they could’ve made after missing out on the King.
