Washington Wizards: 5 reasons Troy Brown Jr. was a good pick

1. He’ll help modernize the Wizards

With every year that passes, the Wizards’ roster looks more and more equipped to handle the rigors of today’s game.

Their bench and starting lineup are both filled with position-less, long-armed players that can either, create for themselves and others, defend multiple positions, hit 3s or some combination of those three. The drafting of Brown represents another step in the right direction for this franchise.

As with many players his age, Brown is far from a finished product. He will need to add some weight to his 208-pound frame, especially if he inhabits the same conference as LeBron. He will also have to improve his 3-point shooting; 29.1 percent isn’t going to cut it in today’s NBA. However, his 74.3 free throw percentage suggests that he can improve his shooting stroke.

If he can improve in those areas, and I assume he will, the Wizards will have a very good two-way player on their hands. If his shooting improves, Washington can start to move from traditional big men Mahinmi and Gortat, giving Wall a little more room to drive to the paint and either create a shot for himself or one of his teammates.

The best teams in the NBA — particularly the Golden State Warriors — thrive on having versatile lineups that are effective against a multitude of opponents. While the Wizards are nowhere close to that level yet, selecting Brown in this year’s draft makes them a little more adaptable and a little more dangerous.
