Loser: Utah Jazz

Okay, I understand that NBA executives and I do not always see eye-to-eye. I understand that some players that I think are the best available differ from others. However, taking Grayson Allen with the 21st pick in the NBA draft was a MASSIVE reach. Normally we see upside reaches, which I can understand as well. Allen has probably one of the lowest upsides of any player selected in the first round.

My real gripe with this pick is that you want Grayson Allen to be a spot-up shooter. That’s fine, but when Allen’s only real value is shooting, that is not okay. There is relatively zero creation or passing equity with Allen. He also projects to be a below-average NBA defender.

With all the 3-and-D wings that were still on the board, they chose one of the worst perimeter defenders in the draft. I understand the thought process behind this pick, wanting to transition Donovan Mitchell into an even larger usage role, but this was a poor selection.

In the second round, the Utah Jazz swung back around and selected Vincent Edwards out of Purdue with the 52nd pick. I actually like this pick, but they dealt it to the Houston Rockets for cash.
